Capoeira is an Afro-Brasilian martial art, dance, and acrobatics display that is sweeping the nation.  Capoeira was born as an expression of resis­tance and resilience, and brought spiritual and emotional empowerment to the oppressed. The art form is a reflection of the cultural and social integra­tion of the diverse peoples comprising modern-day Brazil. Capoeira is now an internationally respected art of grace and strength. Seen in video games, movies, and music videos all over the world, capoeira is the international sensation.

Grupo Maculelê was established in the USA in December 2002 with the arrival of Mestre Fran and Professora Sara. The Milwaukee branch was firmly established with Mestre Azulão's arrival in Wisconsin in July 2007.
